Service Attended by Jimmy Carter Honors Rosalynn Carter

Former President Jimmy Carter joined dignitaries at a tribute service in Georgia on Tuesday to honor the late humanitarian and former first lady, Rosalynn Carter. The service was attended by President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, first lady Jill Biden, and all living former first ladies. Rosalynn Carter passed away on November 19 at the age of 96, with her husband by her side. Their son, James “Chip” Carter III, paid tribute to his mother, recounting her support through personal struggles and her unwavering faith.

During the service, Vice Chair of the Carter Center, Kathryn Cade, highlighted Rosalynn Carter’s impactful role in leading the nation. Cade emphasized the former first lady’s dedication to alleviating suffering, supporting caregivers, advocating for equal rights, and addressing mental health stigma. Despite her significant contributions, Cade noted Rosalynn Carter’s humility, stating that she “never sought fame, fortune, or accolades for the work that she did.”

Jimmy Carter, in frail health and using a wheelchair, attended the service with his family. The couple, married for 77 years, had four children and 22 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family members, including grandchildren, served as honorary pallbearers. Journalist Judy Woodruff praised their enduring love story, and Amy Carter shared a letter her father wrote to Rosalynn 75 years ago.

The service included readings of Bible verses by descendants and musical performances featuring artists Rosalynn Carter admired, such as pianist David Osborne, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chamber Chorus, and family friends Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood. Dignitaries, including the Bidens, Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, Laura Bush, Melania Trump, and Bill Clinton, attended the tribute.

Following the service, a funeral procession will take place on Wednesday to Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia, the Carters’ hometown. A private interment will follow at the Carter family residence. Rosalynn Carter had lain in repose at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum, where the public paid their respects. A wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Rosalynn Carter Health and Human Sciences Complex at Georgia Southwestern State University.
