Sources indicate that Patrick Kane is set to ink a deal with the Red Wings.

Patrick Kane is set to sign a one-year, $2.75 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings, according to sources reported by ESPN on Tuesday.

Kane, a veteran with 16 years in the NHL, spent the majority of his career with the Chicago Blackhawks before a trade to the New York Rangers last spring. Currently recovering from hip resurfacing surgery undergone six months ago, the nine-time All-Star explored options with various teams, including the Buffalo Sabres, Florida Panthers, Dallas Stars, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Boston Bruins over the past month.

In the final week of decision-making, Kane narrowed his focus to two Eastern Conference teams. The deal with the Red Wings, as per sources, does not include any bonuses.

The 35-year-old forward relocated his family to Toronto during the rehabilitation period, where he worked with Dr. Edward Hsu, the surgeon who performed the hip resurfacing, and Ian MacIntyre, who oversaw Kane’s recovery. Kane engaged in on-ice training in Toronto alongside former NHL player Cody Hodgson, who assisted with drills and puck work.

In Zoom meetings with general managers and coaches, Kane was questioned about his commitment to the demanding rehab process for a surgery with limited precedent in the NHL. His consistent response was rooted in his love for the game.

Throughout the process, Kane displayed humility, acknowledging the need to earn his place and expressing no expectations of playing on a team’s top line or power-play unit.

Boasting an impressive career with 1,237 points in 1,180 games, Kane ranks fourth among active players. His 451 career goals stand as the sixth-highest among active players.

Sources reveal that Kane’s decision was influenced by his admiration for Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde’s strategic hockey knowledge and vision for the team. The move also offers the opportunity for Kane to reunite with former Chicago linemate Alex DeBrincat.

During his rehabilitation, Kane maintained contact with other athletes who underwent hip resurfacing, including Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom and tennis star Andy Murray.

Despite the Red Wings’ seven-year playoff drought, the team is displaying signs of progress in their rebuild, currently holding third place in the Atlantic Division with an 11-6-3 record as of Tuesday.
