“PITTSBURGH — With Kenny Pickett sidelined due to a high ankle sprain, the Pittsburgh Steelers have designated Mitch Trubisky as their starting quarterback. However, with only Mason Rudolph available as the backup, the team is actively exploring external options for a third quarterback.

Under the new NFL rule, teams can have three quarterbacks available on game day without utilizing a roster spot for their active list. While the QB3 is technically inactive, they can step in if both the starter and backup are unable to play.

Before Pickett’s injury, Rudolph served as the team’s third-string quarterback on game days. Now, with Pickett out, Rudolph moves up as the backup to Trubisky. The Steelers are in the process of evaluating external options to fill the vacant QB3 spot.

Head coach Mike Tomlin mentioned that the team plans to make a move within the next 24 hours to secure another quarterback as they prepare for a short week and their upcoming game against the New England Patriots.

“We’ll address that here in the next 24 hours. We’ve got options there, certainly,” Tomlin stated.

Potential options for the Steelers include considering Tanner Morgan from the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad, where he spent the summer. Other notable free-agent quarterbacks available include Matt Ryan, Colt McCoy, Jeff Driskel, and more.
